Kashmere Club - Blood Runs Dry

My boys in Kashmere Club have a new video out for their song `Blood Runs Dry’. Wrap your eyes around it. Pretty impressive stuff, ey? Looks very professional. Watching it, you do get the feeling they would have been shaking the sand out for a good couple of hours afterwards- but you’ve got to go the distance for art. Expect to see it pop up on Rage in the next couple of weeks.

And if you haven’t picked up a copy of their Roundabout Girl EP yet, go out and snap up a copy now. I’m serious. Good homegrown stuff indeed.

Kashmere Club - Roundabout Girl EP

Are all of today’s pretentious indie-rockers leaving you feeling a little alienated? Can’t relate to those hipsters that clog up the radio with their re-hashed Strokes riffs and gimmicky matching outfits? Want to be part of something less facile and more musically welcoming?

While you may have never met Will O’Connell, Jonathon Colliver or Nathan Johnston, these three young musicians from Melbourne are extending an invite to you to join them on their aural journey with the release of their Roundabout Girl EP. Collectively known as Kashmere Club, the trio are purveyors of smooth, bluesy rock with honest intent that stands in stark contrast to the often glitzy showmanship of other rock groups out there. Their music is homegrown, emanating from the suburbs of Melbourne, and has a relatable quality to it, like an old friend or a warm blanket that you wrap yourself up in on a cold evening.

Taking a healthy dose of influence from the likes of John Mayer, Hendrix and The Rolling Stones amongst others, the EP is punctuated with five tracks that incorporate elements of country, alternative rock and silky smooth blues. “Blood Runs Dry’’ kicks off proceedings with a twangy guitar riff that builds in urgency, accompanied by vocalist and guitarist Will O’Connell’s soulful croon and the sturdy rhythmic backbone of Colliver’s bass and Johnston’s drumming. It’s a tasty little piece of ear candy that will entice you to kick up your feet and wiggle your hips before you are quickly sedated by the following track, “Indigo Home’’, which radiates with its warm summery vibe and Mayer-esque riff. As my personal favourite of the bunch, it’s this second song off the EP that really showcases the maturity of this young band’s songwriting, placing a modern twist on the blueprints set down by their musical forefathers. It’s got groove, melody and plenty of charm – a great one to mellow out to after a hectic day at the office.

As the EP progresses, “Nico’’ interjects with a cruisey jam complete with some exceptional lead guitar from O’Connell (seriously, if you didn’t know of his young age you’d swear you were listening to some seasoned blues veteran, harden from years of playing to packed crowds in seedy bars. He can really make that six-string sing). Elsewhere, “Roundabout Girl’’ has an infectious little chorus, which as the title suggests, gets stuck in your thoughts with its cart wheeling hook while “Fireless Heart’’ rounds things out with its mellow swing and introspective lyrics.

Having done the rounds playing everywhere from city hangouts including The Tote and Espy to far off regional gigs across the state, the release of this EP is only going to strengthen the numbers of those gravitating towards the band. So pull up a chair, open your ears and join the Kashmere club today.
