Ernest Greene - aka Washed Out - makes music that sounds exactly like his stage name suggests: it’s wispy, airy, dreamy and free flowing. So it’s no surprise that his music has been categorised as part of the so called `chillwave’ movement.
What is surprising though is that Washed Out has generated a great deal of hype online and in certain music circles despite not having released a single full-length album. A stream of singles and EPs has allowed Greene to land spots on impressive festival line-ups including last year’s Meredith Music Festival, the 2010 Pitchfork Music Festival and 2011 ATP Nightmare Before Christmas.
However, good things come to those who wait. It’s been revealed that Washed Out will release his debut album Within and Without in mid July. The album was recorded with Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Deerhunter) and features the raunchy cover art above.
I remember watching Washed Out at the Meredith Music Festival last year and being really swept up by his performance despite not knowing any of the songs. I found his music quite relaxing and think it would appeal to fans of bands like Beach House, Air and M83.
